A broad coalition of 70 European associations from across the packaging value chain is urging the European Commission to reconsider the current direction of the Joint Research Centre’s (JRC) guidelines on EU waste sorting labels.
The latest draft suggests using text and colour, potentially requiring up to 24 different languages on packaging. Such an approach risks fragmenting the Single Market, creating unnecessary burdens for businesses, and confusing consumers.
For the system to deliver real impact, it must be simple, scalable, and accessible to all. The most effective solution is a harmonised, pictogram-only labelling system, a visual language that works across borders and gives consumers the clarity they need.
