European Parliament confirms new College of Commissioners

Press Releases 27 Nov 2024

Today in Strasbourg, MEPs voted to endorse the new College of European Commissioners paving the way for President Ursula von der Leyen to begin her second term on 1 December.

APPLiA, the European association representing home appliance manufacturers in Europe, welcomes the new Commission and its commitment to strengthening European competitiveness and prosperity.

Paolo Falcioni, Director General of APPLiA (he/him):

“The focus on competitiveness aligns with the vision outlined in the Draghi Report, which is crucial for the European manufacturing industry not to lose momentum on the international stage.

Completing the Single Market, promoting circularity and ensuring clear, supportive frameworks for businesses navigating the transition to sustainability are essential steps for Europe’s resilience, competitiveness and economic security – but it needs concrete, targeted action.

Green competitiveness drives the path to sustainable growth. We’re pleased to see the new EU Clean Industrial Deal, reflecting our industry manifesto. It’s really important that home appliances are part of it as a key enabler of decarbonisation and a strategic sector with high socio-economic impact. Appliances such as fridges, washing machines and irons are present in the home of all European households and others, like heat pumps, should become equally familiar. They offer significant environmental potential through energy efficiency and sustainability, while driving innovation and supporting over 1 million jobs in Europe. This is a huge business opportunity for the European Union in so many ways - to champion clean tech, to cut emissions and to ease the financial burden on consumers, addressing the affordability gap.

As the new Commission takes office, we urge European leaders to recognise the crucial role that home appliances can play in achieving Europe's decarbonisation, industrial, and social objectives.”
