EU Water Resilience Strategy should prioritise affordability of water-saving products

Press Releases 05 Jun 2025

The European Commission just presented its Water Resilience Strategy looking to secure Europe's water future by 2050. APPLiA, the voice of the home appliance industry in Europe, welcomes the plan’s focus on ensuring proper resource management, addressing water scarcity and promoting a water-wise circular economy and recognises this as a crucial opportunity to empower consumers with access to efficient, water-saving products.

Korrina Hegarty, APPLiA Senior Environment Policy Director, commented: The Strategy rightly places the 'Water Efficiency First' principle as a core tenet. Modern, efficient home appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines, are prime examples of this principle in action at the household level. Over the past two decades, average water consumption for these products has seen a dramatic reduction, delivering demonstrable savings to European households and contributing substantially to environmental protection. These technological advancements underscore the industry's dedication to innovation and sustainability.

APPLiA and its members have long been at the forefront of consumer awareness initiatives, championing water-saving habits and demonstrating our unwavering commitment to this vital challenge. And citizens are increasingly eager to contribute. According to GfK data, 97% of global consumers report using saving strategies in 2023, including prioritising efficient products. The market is primed for water-smart technologies, but accessibility and affordability remain a major barrier. Policy intervention is needed to overcome financial hurdles and ensure these solutions reach everyone. This is what the Strategy should champion.”

The plan highlights new requirements under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Product Regulation (ESPR) and the Energy Labelling Working Plan 2025-2030 for water-relevant energy-related products like dishwashers and washing machines. While these measures will surely continue to contribute to further advancements in product efficiency, their full impact hinges on practical measures to enable a widespread shift towards water-smart products. This includes targeted financial incentives, such as rebates, tax breaks, or subsidised financing options, specifically for appliances in the highest energy and water efficiency classes.

APPLiA calls on the European Commission and Member States to prioritise the affordability and widespread accessibility of water-saving appliances within the implementation of the EU Water Resilience Strategy. By ensuring that these essential technologies are within reach for all consumers, Europe can effectively empower its citizens to become active partners in achieving the ambitious goal of water resilience by 2050.
