APPLiA - Home Appliance Europe is the trade association representing home appliance manufacturers across Europe, with 25 direct members and 28 national associations. APPLiA advocates for the industry's commitment to promoting sustainable lifestyles by enhancing appliance performance while minimising environmental impact. The Association actively engages in areas such as sustainability, circular economy, energy efficiency, ecodesign, energy labelling, e-waste management, resource efficiency, chemicals, digital economy, trade, consumer protection, safety, and standardisation.

Position Summary

We are looking for a proactive Environment Policy Officer with a passion for European affairs and environmental topics to join our dynamic Environment team, reporting directly to the Senior Policy Director for Environment. In this role, you'll play a crucial part in actively shaping the landscape for the home appliance sector on key EU environmental policy topics such as: the Chemicals Industrial Package, Critical Raw Materials, Plastics, F-Gases, Food Contact Materials, Batteries, Ecodesign for Sustainable Products, the Circular Economy Act, E-Waste (WEEE), Recycling, Repair, and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation. 

What you'll do

As our Environment Policy Officer, your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Monitor and analyse EU environmental legislation and initiatives, assessing their impact on the home appliance sector and identifying key challenges and opportunities.
  • Contribute to APPLiA's policy recommendations and advocacy strategies. Draft compelling policy papers, position papers, briefings, and presentations for EU policymakers, regulators, members, and senior management, actively proposing ideas and finding compromises. 
  • Cultivate strong relationships with key EU stakeholders, including institutions, industry experts, and national actors. Effectively communicate the industry's views at events and meetings, building and nurturing a vital network of contacts. 
  • Coordinate internal member working groups, ensuring efficient information flow and collaborative engagement. Preparing news alerts, managing email communications, setting meeting agendas, drafting minutes, organising presentations, compiling essential documents, and handling logistics. Work effectively within and across internal teams, fostering collaboration to achieve shared policy objectives.
  • Manage environmental policy projects (research, consultations, events) and support advocacy activities by coordinating efforts with national actors and other European industry sectors, including arranging and organising impactful policy documents, meetings and events.
Where you shine
Essential Experiences & Qualifications:
  • A relevant Bachelor's or Master's Degree, ideally with studies focused on European affairs or environmental/chemicals topics.
  • At least 2 years of relevant professional experience in Brussels within a European institution, association, consultancy, or similar organisation.
  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken.
  • Good understanding of EU institutions and political processes.
  • High level of IT literacy, including Google Workspace and MS Office (creating presentations, spreadsheets, databases), and web-meeting platforms.
Key Skills & Abilities: 
  • Strong ability to analyse complex content and present it clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Capable of drafting and editing engaging reports, briefings, and position papers.
  • Skilled at moderating discussions, proposing ideas for positions, and finding compromises.
  • Proven organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing demands and deadlines effectively.
  • Project management and presentation skills.
Desirable Attributes & Soft Skills:
  • Experience with EU environmental issues is a definite plus, particularly knowledge of the chemicals and materials field.
  • Proficiency in other European languages is a strong advantage.
  • A service- and solution-oriented approach.
  • A positive mindset and ability to work well within and across diverse teams.
  • Outgoing personality with a passion for building and nurturing professional relationships.
  • Ability to work autonomously and effectively in a cross-cultural stakeholder environment.
  • Willingness to travel for member meetings and events across Europe.

APPLiA – Home Appliance Europe is looking for a motivated individual with an interest in environmental and energy policy, to join the APPLiA team for a 6-months paid internship, with the possibility of extension. Please note that candidates must be eligible for a Convention D’immersion Professionnelle (CIP). Location: Brussels, Belgium

Position summary

The successful candidate will report to the Policy Director for Energy & Environment and play a proactive role in APPLiA’s energy team in policy tasks related to the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products, Circular Economy, Repair, Energy Labelling Regulation, Critical Raw Materials, and Environmental Label. 

What you’ll do
  • Monitoring, intelligence gathering and analysis of documentation and legislative proposals related to the current EU environmental and energy policy agenda;
  • Assess the impact of regulatory and policy initiatives on the home appliance sector and support the draft of position papers; 
  • Coordinate internal member working groups - news alerts, preparation of emails, meeting agendas, minutes, presentations, documents and logistics;
  • Prepare briefing materials and presentations for stakeholders, regulators, member organisations and senior management;
  • Support in coordinating and mapping advocacy activities with national actors and other European industry sectors;
  • Arrange outreach and support in organising policy events;
  • Represent APPLiA’s team at external events/meetings, building up and maintaining a network of key contacts for the related energy & environment policy fields. 
Where you shine 
  • Relevant Bachelor or Master’s Degree. Specific studies in European affairs and/or environmental topics are an asset;
  • Excellent command of English (written and oral); knowledge of other European languages would be a strong advantage;
  • Project management and presentation skills;
  • Ability to  draft and edit engaging reports, briefings and position papers; 
  • High level of IT literacy including Google Docs, MS Office, Google presentations, spreadsheets, databases, web-meeting platforms; 
  • Data and information driven, with an ability to work autonomously and simultaneously on competing demands and deadlines;
